Return to index of stories...
Hello, I'm Beth Carroll.
I'm here at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH.which in 2007 celebrated it 100th birthday.
To mark the centennial, the Colony commissioned a series of short films to showcase the art and artistry of this one-of-a-kind artists' retreat.
We're delighted to present this program to you now.
I'll be back after the film, to introduce another piece and a little later, I'll talk to the resident director about plans for the next 100 years.
Here now -- is Seasons of MacDowell.

One of the contributors to Seasons of MacDowell also produced another short piece -- called Landlines. The film captures the story of an art installation created especially to mark the 2007 centennial.

As we've seen, the MacDowell Colony has inspired some of the most important artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
It all began here at Hillcrest, the farmhouse in Peterborough which served as the summer home to Edward and Marian MacDowell.
Here in the recently restored music room -- is where MacDowell composed his music.and where Edward and Marian used to entertain guests, the likes of which included Aaron Copland, and Thorton Wilder.
Recently restored, all of its artifcats in the Music room are original and tell the story of the nation's oldest art colony -- now. in its centennial year.
So, What's ahead for the next hundred years?
David Macy is the resident director of the Colony and joins me now with more.
Q David: Before we fast forward to the future. I want to talk a little about the storied past of the MacDowell colony. It's alumni have won Pulitizer Prizes, Academy Awards, MacArthur Foundation Genius Awards, Grammy's, Guggenheims -- and National Book Awards.
Past residents are a virtual who's who in the art world. Give us a sense of some of the greats who have passed thru here?
Q What does the MacDowell Colony mean to the arts?
Q How is the Macdowell colony supported?
Q How does the colony foster creativity?
Q MacDowell colony said to be the gold standard when it comes to artists colonies.WHY.what makes this so special?
Q How does one get accepted at MacDowell?
What disciplines covered The role of the colony is to bring artists from different disciplines together.just how important is that interaction -- and can you give us any examples of artistic collaboration?
Q No Phone, No internet, no friends or family.WHY not?
Q From time to time you hear the word elitism mentioned.how does the colony fight the perception that this is a haven for the elite?
Q Seasons of MacDowell - consists of 4 short films that capture the essence of being a resident here at the art colony. It wasn't until the mid 70's that filmmakers were included in the program.
MacDowell now has a 32-person film studio with an editing room,.
Are you looking to encourage more filmmakers.
"Americas best kept secret for artists".
q Composer Edward MacDowell found inspiration in this setting,
Thorton Wilder used Peterborough as a model for his pulitizer prize winning play Our Town.how common is it for artists to incorporate this setting into their artistic expression?
Q How is MacDowell celebrating its 100th year?
Q What's ahead for Macdowell colony in 2nd century.
Q Are their plans to include computer artists, and those creatively using digital technology ?
DAVE MACY thank you

the macdowell colony was awarded the National Medal of arts for nuturing and inspiring many of this century/s finest artists.
Who's to say if the vision of Edwin and Marian MacDowell will thrive into the next century?
Only time will tell if the next hundred years inspire and nurture a whole new generation of artists.
I'm Beth Carroll. Thanks for watching.
